Yoga classes at SCSTD are offered for students ages 18 through
Adult and all experience levels. There is no experience necessary
to attend this one hour class. Students will focus on breath, posture,
and movements which will stretch and strengthen the body. At the
same time, students will enjoy and feel renewed by cleansing the
mind and body. There will be a focus on the connection to the breath
and movement, as well as proper alignment.
The word “yoga” has been translated from Sanskrit,
literally meaning yoking, from yunakti akin to the Latin word jungere,
or to join. There has been evidence of yogis practicing for thousands
of years, and its value is still prevalent today in the modern
world.
There are various styles of Yoga and some examples range from Bikram,
Anusara, Ashtanga, Hatha, and Kundalini. Some styles are very slow
and meditative whereas others are rigorous and fast-paced. Each
style of Yoga promotes a different benefit. Here are just a few
examples of some of the benefits of a regular Yoga practice:
- Increases the metabolism
- Develops strength and balance
- Harmonizes the mind, body, and soul
- Detoxifies the body
- Increases flexibility
- Can reduce stress
In our Yoga classes, students who are new to Yoga will begin
to build a foundation for their own practice. More advanced
students will work on more complex poses and postures, and
attempt to take their practice to their own personal level.
Each student will focus on gaining flexibility, balance, and
strength. You will explore the various asanas (yoga poses)
and sequences including backbends, seated postures, standing
postures, and sun salutations. There will also be a focus on
connecting your movement with your breath. Meditation, relaxation,
and various breathing techniques will be introduced.
Private Yoga Instruction
The SCSTD Yoga Program also offers
private instruction for individual students or small groups. You
may be brand new to Yoga, have a physical condition which needs
special attention, or you would like to have specialized one on
one Yoga sessions with an instructor. Please contact the Alpharetta
